The Tamil Nadu government on Friday gave an undertaking before the Madras High Court to defer till Tuesday its instructions to motorists to carry their original driving licences and not just photo copies.
Advocate- General Vijay Narayan gave this undertaking when a writ petition from TN Tipper Urimaiyalar Sammelanam, by its president T Ravichandran of West Tambaram, came up for hearing on Friday.
After recording the submission, Justice M Duraiswamy directed the government not to implement the notification till Tuesday and tagged the writ petition along with PILs on the same issue, which were expected to come up before the first bench that day.
Earlier in the day, traffic police personnel, while conducting vehicle checks, stressed on the need for carrying original licence to the motorists but refrained from enforcing it strictly.
The Judge asked the AG to consider the hardship of drivers, particularly two-wheeler riders, and said that any law should not cause hardship to the public.
Calling the state transport commissioner’s notification improper, the counsel for the petitioner submitted that Rule 139 of Motor Vehicle Rules did not mandate the drivers to carry the original driving licence with them
