The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Thursday stayed proceedings pending against actor Kamal Haasan in the judicial magistrate court at Valliyoor in Tirunelveli.
Justice N Athinathan of the high court's Madurai bench also dispensed with the actor's personal appearance.
A magisterial court of Valliyoor in Tirunelveli district had last month directed Haasan to appear before it on May 5 on a complaint filed by a local trader over his remarks made during a TV interview.
Magistrate Senthil Kumar had on April 21 also ordered police to investigate the matter and file a report at the earliest on the complaint filed by president Athinatha Sundaram of Anjugramam Traders Association.
Following this, Kamal moved the high court for quashing the complaint.
The complaint said the actor participated in a programme aired by a private Tamil television news channel on March 12. When the anchor asked the actor's opinion about violence meted out to women, particularly, those in the cinema industry, the actor replied that Mahabharata narrates a tale of gamble in which a woman is pledged.
"Mahabharata is appreciated in this land and thus it I not surprising that such incidents of violence are happening against women," the actor said.
