Trade unions of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, except the one affiliated to the ruling AIADMK, announced a bus strike across the State on Sunday after failure of talks held with the government.
Southern Railway, in response to a request from the Chairman of Tamil Nadu Transport department, decided to operate special trains today.
The dialogue remained inconclusive after two days of efforts by the Tamil Nadu government. A Soundarajan of Centre of Indian Trade Unions said the corporation was incurring losses for last four years and government remains unconcerned over it.
Commuters were left stranded in various parts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday evening as crew members belonging to transport corporation unions affiliated to opposition parties went on a strike ahead of the originally announced date (Monday, May 15).
Ten major unions, including the Labour Progressive Federation (affiliated to DMK) and CITU which had called for the agitation, took part in the strike.
Transport Minister M.R.Vijayabaskar said only 10 out of 47 unions have decided to join the strike and state government will seek the help of private bus operators for providing relief to the passengers.
