A judicial magistrate court in Ooty on Tuesday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against eight Tamil film actors, including Suriya, Sathyaraj, R Sarathkumar and Sripriya, for their failure to appear before it in connection with a defamation case filed by a freelance journalist.
Ooty Judicial Magjstrate Senthilkumar Rajavel issued NBW against Suriya, Sarathkumar, Sathyaraj, Cheran, Vijayakumar, Vivek, Arun Vijay and Sripriya, on Tuesday, after they did not appear before the court for a second consecutive time. It was a no show on May 15 when the case came up for hearing.
In 2009, a Tamil daily Dinamalar carried a story on some actresses saying they are involved in prostitution along with their pictures, following which the entire film artistes association came together in protest.
Fiery speeches were made against the journalists. Earlier, Dinamalar news editor Lenin was arrested for carrying a story claiming an actress was involved in prostitution.
The complainant, M Rozario, a freelance journalist in Ooty, said the actors who spoke in the meeting attacked all journalists instead of targeting a particular Tamil daily that published the article.
As the case came for trial before the Ooty Magistrate court, the actors moved the Madras High Court with a plea to quash the case. This petition was dismissed by the high court in March, after which the trial resumed.
