Tamil actors move court to prevent arrest

Eight Tamil actors, who are facing non-bailable arrest warrants in a defamation case, have moved a court in Udhagamandalam for recall of the warrants.

The application for recall of the warrants was filed in the court of Judicial Magistrate Senthilkumar Rajavelu by advocate Vishwanathan.

Ooty Judicial Magjstrate Senthilkumar Rajavel issued NBW against Suriya, Sarathkumar, Sathyaraj, Cheran, Vijayakumar, Vivek, Arun Vijay and Sripriya, on Tuesday, after they did not appear before the court for a second consecutive time. It was a no show on May 15 when the case came up for hearing.

In 2009, a Tamil daily Dinamalar carried a story on some actresses saying they are involved in prostitution along with their pictures, following which the entire film artistes association came together in protest.

Fiery speeches were made against the journalists. Earlier, Dinamalar news editor Lenin was arrested for carrying a story claiming an actress was involved in prostitution.

The complainant, M Rozario, a freelance journalist in Ooty, said the actors who spoke in the meeting attacked all journalists instead of targeting a particular Tamil daily that published the article.
