The two factions of the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu- AIADMK Amma led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and AIADMK PTA headed by his predecessor O Panneerselvam-vied with each other in inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the birth centenary celebrations of AIADMK founder M G Ramchandran, popularly called as MGR.
Palaniswami submitted a letter requesting him to unveil the portrait of Jayalalithaa in the chamber of State Assembly.
"Sir, a towering personality and statesman like you, who has upheld the finest traditions of our vibrant democracy and maintained the cherished values of our Parliamentary system, would be the befitting person to unveil the portrait of our revered leader Hon’ble Amma," he said.
"Sir, it would be a fitting tribute to the memory of Bharat Ratna Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MGR if the valedictory event of the birth centenary celebration is graced by you as Chief Guest," he said.
A couple of hours later, the OPS camp issued a statement, stating that during his meeting with Modi on May 19, Panneerselvam, after taking up various issues concerning the state, also invited him for the MGR's birth centenary fete
to be celebrated in October in a grand manner on behalf of the AIADMK PTA.
"Modi has promised that he will definitely participate in the function and asked us to intimate the date of the event", the statement said.
Palaniswami said he did not discuss anything related to politics with the PM. Instead, he said that he had urged the Prime Minister to speed up implementation of various schemes.
