IIT-Madras student attacked for attending beef fest

A PhD scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM), on Tuesdaysuffered serious eye injury when he was attacked by a group of students for participating in a 'beef fest' held in the campus.

At the fest, around 80 students reportedly discussed the Central government's recent ban on sale of cattle for slaughter at cattle markets and ate beef as a mark of protest.

Quoting eyewitness accounts, reports the incident happened around 2.15pm as the victim -- R Sooraj -- was having lunch with a friend, Anoop, at a mess serving Jain food, when a group of eight students, belonging to the Vivekananda Study Circle, approached the duo.

"The group was led by Manish Kumar Singh, a master's degree student with the ocean engineering department," said Manoj Parameswaran, a friend of Sooraj.

Sooraj sustained serious injuries to his eye in the attack. He has been taken to Sankara Nethralaya, Nungambakkam, for treatment. He is now in the emergency care of the hospital.

The attack has attracted widespread condemnation. Meanwhile, the Madras High Court on Tuesday stayed for four weeks the Centre's notification banning sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter, and sought its response to PILs which contended that the rules should have been approved by Parliament first.
