Metro Rail service starts between Thirumangalam-Nehru Park, 40% discount in ticket fares

Metro rail service between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park in Chennnai was inaugurated on Sunday by Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu and chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

After the inauguration, Naidu and Palaniswami along with Ministers travelled in the first train after which normal train services resumed on the 7.4 km long first fully underground stretch.

For the next seven days, there will be a 40 per cent discount in ticket fares, the Metro Rail has announced.

This Metro line will be the third stretch to become operational in the city. The first stretch between Alandur and Koyambedu was completed in June, 2015.

The second one between Chennai Airport and Little Mount was completed in September 2016.

Speaking at the inaugural event on Sunday, Palaniswami alleged that the previous DMK government delayed the Metro Rail project when it was in power.

The inauguration of the third stretch would considerably ease the traffic congestion in the city.

With the CMRL planning to providing direct services to airport, a passenger could travel from Nehru Park to Airport under 40 minutes as against 90 minutes by road.
