Opposition-backed trade unions of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) continued their indefinite strike demanding wage revision, among other issues, for the second consecutive day today.
Representatives of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and state transport minister M.R. Vijayabhaskar failed to reach a consensus after several rounds of talks over the last one week.
The minister claimed that 75% buses were operational and starting Tuesday, all buses will run.
Despite the best efforts of authorities concerned to maintain normality, many buses were off the road, causing much hardship to the common people.
About 60% of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses were operated successfully in south Chennai region since Monday morning, said an officer, adding that private mini buses too were pressed into the service for the convenience of commuter. They had been given full police protection, he said.
Employees affiliated to the ruling AIADMK’s trade union, Anna Thozhirsanga Peravai (ATP), are officially working. Ten unions led by CITU and DMK are leading the strike.
