Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswamy on Monday described extremism, communalism and left-wing terrorism as "very big threats" to the society, and called for strengthening intelligence mechanisms to tackle anti-social elements.
Inaugurating the three-day conference of Distrct Collectors and the Superintendents of Police (SPs) at the State Secretarat here, he said only if the Collectors and SPs maintain law and order, peace would prevail in the state.
"If the Collectors and SPs act unitedly as two eyes and not as two poles, the law and order situation in the state could further be well maintained," he said.
The chief minister urged the collectors and district police heads to ensure that "destructive forces" are kept under control and ensure the state progressed on the growth path.
All-round peace is the hallmark of the AIADMK government, he said, adding people and groups acting against the interest of national security should be dealt with strictly under the National Security Act.
Quoting former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, he said, “it is important that we should always be on the side of people, no matter whether they are on our side or not.”
The Chief Minister called for better coordination between IAS and IPS officials.
