The Tamil Film Producers Council has said it is firm in its decision to go for a complete shutdown from March 16, despite a compromise formula by digital service provide Qube.
There will be no new Tamil releases or shooting schedules from March 16. The Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors Association (TNFEA) has also announced an indefinite strike urging the Tamil Nadu government to remove the 8% local body tax.
It may be recalled that from 1 March, Tamil Film Producers Council chose not to release any movies alleging that the DSPs, who extend content solutions to cinema theatres in getting the films for exhibition, were charging exorbitant fee.
Multiple representations in person and through written communication had been made by the industry seeking lowering of the rates but to of no avail. As a result release of over 20 films including small and big were affected.
Meanwhile, Qube in a release said it has decided to reduce digital fee by 18-23 per cent. It has requested the Tamil Film Producers Council to withdraw its ongoing strike in the interest of the film industry.
"In the interest of cinema, cinema lovers, the Tamil film industry and the huge amount of money locked in finished productions, we hereby request the Tamil Film Producers Council not to stop releases and we hereby request theatres to open," it said.
It added: "This is a critical time for cinema to compete with online platforms and lack of releases can work against the medium and break the movie-going habit of our audiences."
