A VHP-backed yatra aimed at mobilising support for a Ram temple in Ayodhya entered Tamil Nadu on Tuesday amidst opposition by DMK, pro-Tamil and some Muslim outfits which claimed it would disturb communal amity.
Pandemonium and uproarious scenes were witnessed in
the Tamil Nadu Assembly over the entry of VHP-backed Ram Rajya Rath Yathra into the State on Tuesday morning, culminating in the en masse eviction of DMK members after the government rejected the Oppositon demand to ban the
Yathra.
Immediately after their eviction, the DMK members led by Working President M K Stalin hit the streets by squatting on the road infront of the state secretariat demanding a ban on Yathra and staged a road roko, leading to their arrests.
Hitting out at Stalin for 'politicising' the Rath Yatra of the VHP, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday said it was allowed in Tamil Nadu since the government respects the sentiments of believers of all religions.
He said that Rath passed five states peacefully already without any problems. Earlier, during Zero Hour, Stalin moved a special calling attention motion and spoke on the issue.
But his remarks were later expunged by Speaker Dhanapal
after leader of the House and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said they were aimed at instigating violence in the State.
