TN budget session starts, AIADMK & DMK MLAs meeting in evening

The budget session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly started today, with deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam, who holds the finance portfolio, presenting the budget.

In the evening, both the ruling AIADMK and the main opposition DMK have called for meetings of their MLAs, to discuss strategies for the Assembly session.

Tamil Nadu government is mulling passing a resolution on Cauvery in the budget session, even as the main opposition, DMK, is insisting on holding a special sitting to get the Centre to constitute Cauvery Management Board.

This will be the State's first budget after the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax and the first budget after the merger of factions led by Panneerselvam and chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

The budget is likely to be populist and tax-free, sources said. It is expected that many crucial announcements will be made during the budget. Also, the session is expected to be stormy with the Opposition planning to raise various issues.

During the last budget session, it was said that the net outstanding debt at the end of 31 March 2018 will be Rs 3,14,366 crore including the debt taken over from Tangedco.
