Why cops continue to commit suicides in Chennai?

Two days after a Constable committed suicide at the memorial of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa by shooting self, a Sub-Inspector shot himself with a pistol at the Ayanavaram station premises in the early morning hours of Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as R Satish Kumar, a 2011-batch direct sub-inspector. He was a bachelor.

Satish Kumar had been serving as a law and order sub-inspector at the Ayanavaram police since October 4, 2014. He had left a suicide note on his table at the police station stating that no one was responsible for his death.

He is survived by mother, his elder brother Ganesh Kumar and younger brother Selva Kumar. The body was moved to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.

According to reports, a total of 83 police personnel died between April and August last year in Tamilnadu. Of the 83 deaths, 15 were cases of suicide while 29 were killed in road accidents and another 20 died after heart attacks.

Senior police officials in the State police are aware of the alarming trend happening in the department and they say they are looking at it seriously.
