Government doctors and medical associations, who were on strike for the past 17 days in Tamil Nadu protesting the Supreme Court ruling against 50 per cent service quota reserved for higher education in medicine, have called off their agitation.
They announced their decision to withdraw the strike, hours after the Madras High Court took a serious view of their protest.
TN Government Doctors Association General Secretary, Dr P Balakrishnan told reporters here that they have decided to withdraw their strike and resume work.
He said the decision was taken based "on our faith in the judiciary and the assurance of the government that it will take steps on the matter," adding "we hope, there will be good outcome to our demand."
Ravindranath GR, General Secretary, Doctors' Association for Social Equality, said the associations have decided to call off the protest after the State government officials requested them to consider the inconvenience caused to patients in the past few weeks in many government hospitals.
Ravindranath said Health Minister C Vijaya Bhaskar and Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan had promised the medical fraternity that the State would work with the Medical Council of India and Centre and take all necessary steps to allow the 50 per cent service quota reserved for higher education in medicine.
