A day after the supreme court sentenced Kolkata high court judge, Justice Karnan to six months in prison on charges of contempt, reports said that a team of Kolkata police would arrest him in Chennai today.
Soon after the verdict, Justice Karnan, who hails from Tamil Nadu, met the media in Chennai.
Karnan’s arrest orders came a day after he sentenced Chief Justice of India JS Khehar and six other judges of the Supreme Court to five years in jail under the SC/ST act.
A seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice JS Khehar said, "We are of the unanimous opinion that Justice CS Karnan has committed contempt of this court, of the judiciary as also the judicial process...of the gravest nature."
Justice Karnan, on warpath with the Supreme Court for the last several months, would be the first sitting judge of a high court to be sent to jail. He was due to retire next month.
The bench, which also comprised senior-most judges, Justices Dipak Misra, J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur, P C Ghose and Kurian Joseph, said it was satisfied that Justice Karnan be sentenced for six months in jail.
