Heavy rains lash TN due to cyclone Okhi, more predicted in coming days
Cyclone Ockhi may have moved away from Kerala’s borders, but it intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Friday and moved to the Arabian Sea, bringing heavy rains to Kanyakumari and other southern parts of Tamil Nadu.
Eight persons have reportedly died so far in rain related incidents. The State government put the official machinery on a high alert and ordered evacuation of people living within 100 metres from the coast and also sought help from the Navy, Coast Guard and the Air Force to assist people in distress.
Rains will once again pick up pace by December 4 night as the low-pressure area which is over Andaman Sea is expected to move towards Tamil Nadu due to which heavy rains will be seen over the region.
Fishermen in coastal regions in southern Tamil Nadu including Kanyakumari, Tuticorin and Ramanathapuram districts have been advised not to venture into sea for the next 24 hours.
Rescue operations are on by the Southern Naval Command, which has deployed three ships and two aircraft to locate around 13 fishermen who are missing. Sea conditions are expected to be very rough in the area, the weather office said.
Normal life has been thrown out of gear in the coastal belt, with the rains uprooting trees and electric poles and damaging houses and roads since Thursday.
