The Tamil Nadu government has sought Rs 1,500 crore from the Union government towards flood relief.
A request in this regard was made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam met him on Monday in Chennai.
Disclosing this, Palaniswami told reporters that Modi promised him all assistance from the central government for relief and rehabilitation work.
He said the Prime Minister was apprised of the preparation of a plan to construct a drainage network to avoid flooding in Chennai, the neighbouring areas of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts and in the coastal areas of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur.
Meanwhile, a tweet by PMO said, "On landing in Chennai, PM @narendramodi discussed the situation arising due to heavy rains and floods in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu with the CM & Dy CM of the state. He assured them of all assistance from the Centre."
Palaniswami said they elaborated about the rain damage to Modi and sought financial assistance from the Union government to carry out repair and relief works.
Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan and Panneerselvam were present during the press conference.
