The income tax investigation wing officials conducted searches late Friday at a room on the compound of late Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden residence in Chennai.
Four Income Tax Department officers, accompanied by at least 20 other officials to help with document sorting, are believed to have conducted the raid, which began at 9.30 pm Friday. Searches were conducted at Jayalalithaa's secretary Poongundran's house.
As the IT raids continue, Jaya TV CEO Vivek Jayaraman arrived there. He expresssed dismay at the action and said pen drives, laptop and letters were seized.
VP Kaliarajan, supporter of TTV Dinakaran supporter and former MLA called these raids as a political vendetta. “This is just political vendetta and targeting of one family,” he said.
Heavy security was deployed to avoid any untoward incident but as soon as the news of the I-T team reaching Veda Nilayam spread, a large number of protesters gathered outside the area and clashed with the police. The sprawling bungalow was almost empty when the I-T officials reached there.
TTV Dhinakaran tweeted: "The raids shows OPS and EPS would commit any treachery to save their posts. The searches are an assault on Amma’s legacy and EPS &OPS are behind it. People behind these raids have to answer AIADMK cadres."
