The Madras High Court on Friday confirmed the two-year jail term awarded to M Natarajan, husband of jailed AIADMK leader V K Sasikala, for evasion of customs duty on the import of a luxury car.
However, since only recently he underwent dual organ transplant, it is sad he would file an appeal against the order citing health reasons.
Delivering the verdict on the appeals filed by Natarajan and three other accused, including his nephew V Bhaskaran, challenging the 2010 order of CBI Special Court, Justice G Jayachandran upheld the CBI court order and dismissed their pleas.
In all six people were cited as accused in the case. Apart from Natarajan and Bhaskaran, whose houses and offices
were raided by the Income-Tax department as part of the masssive crackdown on the entire Sasikala clan last week for tax evasion and for allegedly routing funds through shell companies during the note ban, the other accused in the case were London-based businessman Balakrishnan, who had sent the car, his son Yogesh and Indian Bank Abhiramapuram Branch Manager Sujaritha Sundararajan and Assistant
Manager R Bhavani.
With Balakrishnan on the run, the case was proceeded against the remaining four who were convicted by the CBI court. They moved the Madras High Court against it.
According to the CBI, Natarajan, along with three others, substituted the original sale invoice with a photocopy of an invoice fabricated by changing the vehicle's manufacturing date to July 1993.
They cleared the car under transfer of residence provision and thereby caused a loss of Rs 1.06 crore to the exchequer by way of short levy, penalty and redemption fine.
