Rains back in Chennai, leave declared for schools

With rains lashing Chennai and its suburbs again, holiday has been declared for schools in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur districts.

Chennai felt sharp shower of rains due to bands of rain clouds from a depression formed in the Bay of Bengal.

Though heavy rains were predicted since Sunday morning, the bands failed to crossover the coast due to which Chennai experienced staggered showers.

But around 8 pm, the rains began in the city and within 30 minutes, 30mm rain was recorded in Nungambakkam and 16mm in Anna Nagar. Eekattuthangal, Guindy, Manapakkam, Madhuravayal, Adyar and Kodambakkam also faced a good shower.

As per weather models, the rains are likely to pick up the pace in the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures will settle around 27 degrees but as the day progresses, rainy weather will take over.

The city will get intermittent showers on Monday, said area cyclone warning centre director S Balachandran. Most parts of north coastal TN and some parts of south coastal TN will get rainfall on Sunday. Isolated rainfall will occur in the interior districts.

Tamil Nadu has received 25cm of rainfall against the usual 26cm of rain. However, Chennai has recorded excess rainfall which is 68 cm of the usual 41cm. Also, the combined level of water reservoirs at Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Redhills and Cholavaram is 37% of its total capacity.
