Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit inspected the Gandhipuram bus stand in Coimbatore on Wednesday and took part in a cleaning drive there as part of the Swachch Bharath initiative.
A meeting of government officials convened by Purohit raised eyebrows, as the meeting was ostensibly meant to get a briefing on activities and governance in the district, usually not part of the Governor's role.
In the meeting with Coimbatore district collector T.N. Hariharan, the governor was briefed on the district administration.
Opposition leader and working president of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) M. K. Stalin said the governor’s review meeting had led to suspicion that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the centre may be trying to rule by proxy in Tamil Nadu.
Coming down heavily on the government led by chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for the review meeting conducted by Purohit in Coimbatore, sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran on Wednesday said that late CM J Jayalalithaa would never allow such things.
However, the BJP state unit backed the Governor, saying he did not exceed his brief as alleged by the opposition parties.
State Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan and Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani, who were in Coimbatore, have maintained that such meetings do not affect the state’s autonomy.
