Refuting a charge by the TTV Dhinakaran camp that the income tax raids at places linked to it were the handiwork of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Tamilisai Soundararajan distanced her party from the I-T action.
"Our party is not responsible for today's raids. It is based on a complaint registered against them that they had evaded tax. Officials are acting as per law. It is so wrong to blame the BJP for this," she said.
Meanwhile, media organisations in Chennai on Thursday condemned officials of the income tax department, for allegedly pressurising Jaya TV to stop airing news about raids being conducted at the premises of the channel's office and other places related to it.
Sleuths from the income tax department carried out searches at the houses and premises of sidelined AIADMK leader T T V Dhinakaran as well as other family members, relatives and supporters of his aunt and jailed party general secretary V K Sasikala, including her brother V K Divakaran, at their hometown of Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district on Thursday.
I-T officials swooped down on the Jaya TV office, Namadhu MGR, Jazz Cinemas and other establishments. In all, simultaneous raids have been underway in more than 150 locations in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Delhi.
TTV Dhinakaran, AIADMK leader and Sasikala’s nephew, in a press conference termed the raids “political motivated” and said that the raids would not weaken his faction of the AIADMK.
