EPS camp says it will support BJP candidate in Prez polls

The ruling AIADMK (Amma) will support the NDA's presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami said on Wednesday.

Palaniswami made his announcement a day after All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (Amma) leader TTK Dinakaran met his aunt and party supremo VK Sasikala in a Bengaluru jail.
Dinakaran had claimed the AIADMK needed the jailed party leader’s approval for any presidential candidate they supported.

A brief statement issued by the party after a “consultation” meeting held at the party headquarters, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called Palaniswami over phone and sought the AIADMK (Amma)’s support for Kovind’s candidature.

The party considered this at a consultative meeting and decided to extend support to him, the release said.

The President of India is chosen by an electoral college, which comprises elected MPs and MLAs of all states and Union Territories.

Earlier in the day, Palaniswami hosted an Ifthar on behalf of the party in Chennai. Many MLAs who had expressed loyalties with Dinakaran had boycotted it.
