Plastic rice in TN? Govt warns strict action

Amid reports that adulterated ‘plastic rice’ is doing the rounds across States, Tamil Nadu Food Minister R Kamaraj has assured that “every” rice bag received by the State from the Central pool was being monitored.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “there is no question of plastic rice in Tamil Nadu. It is not being sold anywhere in these parts.”

He also ruled out the possibility of plastic rice being supplied through ration shops.

“At public distribution outlets, rice is being given either free or at subsidized rates to the general public. Hence, there are no chances for plastic rice there too,” he said.

Replying to a query, he said the rice received from the Central pool was being monitored. “We are checking and monitoring every rice bag received from the central pool,” he said, and added that movement of rice by private parties was also being monitored.

The Minister said, “Out of 1.91 Over one crore persons in the State have linked their Aadhaar numbers with their ration card entries."

He said committee will be formed to correct the smart cards in all the districts.
