The Presidential polls united the faction-ridden AIADMK with the three warring factions of the ruling party unanimously backing NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind.
After Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and former CM O Panneerselvam offered support to Kovind, AIADMK (Amma) faction leader T T V Dhinakaran announced the party's support to NDA's candidate Ram Nath Kovind for presidential elections.
He said that as per the order given by party chief V K Sasikala, who is currently in jail, AIADMK (Amma) faction will support the NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind for the presidential elections due on 17 July.
"All of the AIADMK MLAs (Amma Faction), including the MLAs of Puducherry, will whole heartedly support BJP?s Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind," Dinakaran announced.
"This just goes to show, that it is finally the BJP that is calling the shots," says political analyst Gnani Sankaran. "All three of the factions want to woo the BJP and in turn are being controlled by the national party," he adds.
Thambidurai sought to maintain that it was a collective decision of the party office bearers, including "EPS and Sasikala" to back the NDA candidate. "There is no split in the party. Only differences of opinion," the AIADMK leader, who met Panneerselvam in New Delhi, said.
