In an opposition show of strength, top leaders including Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar are in Chennai today to attend an event to mark the 94th birthday and 60 years of DMK chief M Karunanidhi as a legislator.
Karunanidhi, recovering from illness, is not expected to be part of the birthday bash to be held in the evening. But two videos featuring him were released on Friday, much to the delight of party workers.
Karunanidhi has lived a full life, as the cliché goes. His political baptism happened when he was barely 14 years old. He says he took the plunge during the anti-Hindi agitation led by Periyar EV Ramasamy. Three decades later, he donned the mantle of leadership of the DMK, and there has been no stopping since.
The nonagenarian leader is recuperating following a tracheostomy procedure in December last to improve breathing.
The political situation in Tamil Nadu continues to be fluid and the DMK would like to flex its muscles to show that it is waiting in the wings for the Edappadi K Palaniswami government to fall under the weight of its own contradictions.
Stalin would like to bring together all the Opposition parties in the State under one umbrella with the DMK leading the alliance, which can even be fashioned as an anti-BJP front. And this function could be a perfect occasion for that.
