Justice Karnan arrested in Coimbatore

Justice (retired) C S Karnan, who had been absconding since May 9, was arrested by the West Bengal police with the assistance of the Tamil Nadu police from an apartment near Coimbatore around 7.30 pm on Tuesday evening.

He was set to be flown to Chennai on Tuesday night itself, brought to Kolkata today and sent to Presidency jail.

Asked if Justice (retired) Karnan would first be produced in court in Kolkata, an officer of the Criminal Investigation Department of West Bengal Police, which conducted the arrest, said, no question. "The Supreme Court has already ordered a jail term of six months for him," the officer said.

Sixty-two-year-old Karnan, who retired on June 12, had been evading arrest ever since the May 9 Supreme Court order — the first of its kind against a serving high court judge.

“We have arrested former high court judge Karnan from south India,” a senior officer of the CID said in Kolkata. Three police teams from Kolkata were camping here for the last three days and traced Karnan on the basis of his mobile phone calls.

According to the officials, Karnan, who had been staying there for the last few days, resisted the arrest and argued with the police. However, he was taken into custody, they said.
