Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and three other IAS officers on Tuesday appeared in the Madras High Court following its directive on a contempt plea over failure by authorities concerned to reconvey the land acquired by the government for a project.
The court directed Girija Vaidyanathan to issue a circular instructing all government departments to comply with judicial orders in a time-bound manner so that the court was not burdened with increasing number of contempt of court applications.
A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and P. Velmurugan issued the direction after recording the presence of the CS who had been summoned to bring to her attention the sordid state of affairs prevailing in the State where even judicial orders were not complied with promptly.
On November 6, the court summoned them in connection with a contempt plea for disobeying orders passed by a division bench of the court directing the authorities to re-convey unused land acquired by the state for establishing Koyambedu whole sale market.
Meanwhile, the Madras high court on Tuesday refused to dispense with the appearance of the commissioner and secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (SEC) in connection with a contempt plea that the DMK had moved over the poll panel's failure to conduct local body elections as the court had directed.
The bench recorded the officials' appearance and, without acceding to their plea, adjourned the hearing to Friday.
