TThe Tamil Nadu government on Saturday issued orders to hike theatre ticket prices by 25 per cent against the backdrop of the film industry bodies not releasing any new movies to protest the levy of 10 per cent local body tax in the state.
But this has not gone down well with theatre owners and industry leaders, as they said footfalls would go down, if ticket rates are hiked without withdrawing the local body entertainment tax.
As per the orders issued by Home (Cinema) Department, the government has decided to increase the base fare of ticket prices in multiplexes which have more than three screens and other facilities like airconditioning, family entertainment and restaurant facilities, to Rs 150.
The minimum fare of Rs 10 has now been hiked to Rs 15. The latest decision had added to chaos in the Tamil film industry which is already in turmoil due to the ongoing film producer strike against LBET.
For the uninitiated, the Tamil Film Producers’ Council had decided to not release any new films from October 6.
The new order will take effect from October 9. Theatres will have to send an application to the licensing authority concerned with ‘C’ form licences for making the necessary entry/endorsement for revision in rates of admission.
The producers council sought an appointment with officials to discuss the issue and hoped the government would scrap the Act but the state government hasn’t responded yet.
