Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Wednesday said he has directed district Collectors and police officials to act swiftly on complaints of exorbitant interest charged by money lenders, a move which comes after a family committed self-immolation over usury in Tirunelveli district.
He appealed to people who are harassed by usurers to approach district collectors and superintendents of police without fear and get relief.
"I have directed the district collectors and superintendents of police to act swiftly on complaints received under Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act, 2003, enacted by honourable Amma (J Jayalalithaa)," Palaniswami said.
Recalling the enactment of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act in 2003 by late chief minister J Jayalalithaa,he said he has directed the district collectors and superintendents of police to act swiftly on complaints received under the said Act.
He said people borrow loans from private individuals to meet their needs. But, the lenders utilising this opportunity, used to extract exorbitant interest from them, illegally.
Meanwhile, on a day when the fourth member of a family which immolated self unable to bear harassment by loan sharks succumbed to injuries, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to Tamil Nadu government seeking report in connection with the incident.
