Rains lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu on Monday, partially disrupting normal life in Chennai and claiming one life in Thanjavur district.
In Thanjavur, a 38-year-old man died when a mud wall of his hut collapsed in Thinnaiyoor near Orathanadu which experienced heavy rains, police said.
Several schools in Chennai closed ahead of schedule as the city experienced heavy showers. Collectors have announced that all schools and colleges in Chennai and Kancheepuram will remain closed on Tuesday.
The showers caused traffic snarls and inundation, though it brought cheers in several parts hit by water scarcity.
The Met office has forecast heavy to very heavy rains in some areas of coastal districts, including the capital city and its neighbourhood, in the next 24 hours.
“The upper air cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka yesterday continues to be positioned in the same region,” Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre S Balachandran told reporters.
Though the meteorological department announced the onset of monsoon on October 27, the rains evaded core parts of the city till Sunday. A cyclonic circulation that lies over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka is expected to sustain moderate showers over the State for the next two days.
