The Central government has dispatched a mediacal team to Tamil Nadu to investigate the outbreak of dengue in many of its districts.
The multi-disciplinary team, along with state government officials, will investigate the outbreak of febrile illness in certain districts of that state.
The Tamil Nadu government has claimed that the dengue outbreak has been contained in the state but the situation looks grim.
According to a report the state government submitted this week to the National Vector-borne Disease Control Programme of the central government, as many as 11,555 people in the state had been affected by dengue this year till October 2.
More than 6,000 of these cases were reported in August and September.
The team was deputed on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam met him and told him about the problem.
M.K. Stalin, the leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, has alleged that more than 200 people have died of dengue in the state. The government says the number is less but has conceded that over 80 people have died of dengue fever, either due to shock syndrome or haemorrhagic fever.
