RK Nagar: AIADMK, DMK to contest in by-poll; DMDK to stay away

Ruling AIADMK and main opposition DMK have said that they are ready to face the R K Nagar by-election any time.

Speaking to reporters, fisheries minister D Jayakumar said, "whether it is local body polls or general elections, we are ready to fact it at any time".

DMK working president M K Stalin said "even if the Election Commission announces the poll date tomorrow itself, our party is well prepared to contest it".

However, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) president and general secretary Vijayakanth on Friday said that his party will not contest in the by-election to be held for R K Nagar constituency in the city, which was vacated by the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

By-elections to RK Nagar assembly constituency, which was rescinded in April due to allegations of rampant use of money power, will be conducted by the end of this year, Chief Election Commissioner AK Jyoti said in New Delhi on Thursday.

The Election Commission cancelled the byelection, which was scheduled on April 12, after its officials and flying squads of the Income-Tax department concluded that rampant use of money power had vitiated the atmosphere in the constituency.

For the eight-month-old government headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, the by-election to RK Nagar Assembly constituency to be held within two months will indeed be a litmus test.
