The Film and TV Producers Guild and the Telugu Film Producers Council have offered support to Tamil Film Producers Council and its president Vishal, in their efforts against the new tax (local body entertainment tax) levied by the TN government.
Tamil Film Producers Council has said that there would be no Tamil film releases from Friday onwards until the State government removes the 10% entertainment tax and regulates the ticket prices.
Multiplexes in Chennai are already in strike and other theatres are expected to join them soon.
Meanwhile, Film and TV Producers Guild president Sidharth Roy Kapoor and Telugu Film Producers Council Kodali Venkateswara Rao have offered support to Vishal, after he spoke to them over phone.
Vishal, said, "We had given a petition not to levy state government's entertainment tax. And now, the new announcement has come as a rude shock to us. Why does the TN government levy an entertainment tax over and above GST?"
Multiplex Association of India president Deepak Asher said, "MAI believes that this levy of local bodoy entertainment tax (LBET) by the Chennai Corporation leads to double taxation, on an industry which is already leading under the impact of high tax rates and piracy, and could well sound the death knell of the film industry."
