Tamil Nadu health secretary J Radhakrishnan has said as many as 85 people have died in Tamil Nadu due to fever since January, out of which 35 deaths are directly related to dengue.
"Since January this year, 10,032 fever cases were reported in Tamil Nadu. Out of these, 35 people died of dengue," he told reporters.
He added: "Action will be taken against those who dump building rubble and other materials where mosquitoes breed."
Meanwhile, stating that critical stages of dengue like ‘dengue shock syndrome’ and ‘dengue haemorrhagic fever’ had already been covered under Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS), C Vijayabaskar, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, said 4,714 patients with these conditions were treated under the scheme over the past five years.
Vijayabaskar has said that a fever audit was being conducted to confirm the cause of death of patients who died of fever. The climatic changes had resulted in the number of dengue and other communicable disease going up.
But they were only occurring in a defused manner and cannot be termed an outbreak and the government was open to maintaining transparency in this issue, he said after inspecting the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai on Sunday.
