JNU student's death: Family suspects foulplay, leaders demand probe, CM offers assistance

A day after a 28-year-old dalit student from Tamil Nadu allegedly committed suicide at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, police said he was not part of any politically active group on the campus.

The family of Muthu Krishnan, however, alleged foul play behind his death and has demanded that an FIR be registered in the case.

His father Jeevanandam, who arrived the capital on Tuesday from Salem, filed a police complaint asking that an FIR be registered under relevant provisions. He did not say if the family suspected someone murdered Krishnan or abetted his suicide.

DMK working president M K Stalin and other political leaders of the state demanded a CBI probe into the death of Muthukrishanan.

“Muthukrishnan earlier studied in Hyderabad University and participated in the protest seeking justice for the death of Rohit Vemula. The Delhi police cannot brush aside this fact,” Stalin said. AIADMK's TTV Dinakaran and PMK's Anbumani Ramadoss too have demanded probe.

Expressing grief over the death of Muthukrishnan, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday granted a financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh to his family.

He directed officials to extend all assistance in bringing the body of Muthukrishnan to his native. Conveying his condolences, Palaniswami in a statement, said the financial assistance had been sanctioned considering the family background of Muthukrishnan.
