Cell phones, sim cards seized from Murugan at Vellore prison

Two cell phones, three sim cards and a charger were reportedly seized from the cell of Murugan alias Sriharan, one of the life convicts in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, in Vellore Central prison.

Superintendent of the Central Prison G Shanmugha Sundaram said the gadgets were seized when a surprise check was conducted in Murugan's cell in the high security prisoners' block around 7 pm on Saturday.

They found the cell phones, SIM cards and charger hidden behind photographs of some deities in Murugan's cell.

Only recently, two mobile phones and a charger were seized from an inmate of the Vellore Central Prison for Men, it may be recalled.

The prison personnel conducted a surprise check in Saravanan's cell in the Tower Block and seized the mobile phones and charger from him.

In the meantime, three police personnel have been suspended after an accused, remanded in judicial custody, escaped while being taken to Vellore prison.
