Banwarilal Purohit takes charge as TN governor

Banwarilal Purohit took charge as the 25th governor of Tamil Nadu today amid political turbulence in the ruling AIADMK and persistent demand by the opposition for a floor test for the Edappadi K Palaniswami government.

Purohit, a BJP veteran whose political career began with the Congress in Maharashtra, reached Chennai on Thursday to a warm welcome by the top brass of the Tamil Nadu Government, including Palaniswami and deputy CM O Panneerselvam.

Earlier, Maharashtra Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao, who held additional charge of Tamil Nadu since September 2016, was given a warm farewell at the Chennai Airport by the same top brass.

Purohit will become the full-time governor of the state after the retirement of K Rosaiah in August 2016.

Purohit, appointed last week amid growing calls for a full-time governor, was a public personality inseparably involved in social, political, educational and industrial fields of Vidarbha in Maharashtra.

A few days ago, he urged historians of the North eastern region to play a proactive role and act as a bridge between past and present generation.

“Historians of the present day society must take a lead in writing books on the role of freedom fighters and their supreme sacrifices of the sons of the soil so that the present generation could know and study about them,” the Governor said while inaugurating the 38th Annual Conference of North East India History Association at Mirza.
