Woman complains of cops harassment to minister at press meet

An angry woman barged into a press conference being addressed by Transport Minister M.R. Vijayabhaskar at the bus terminus in Koyambedu on Monday and alleged that some policemen had harassed her.

The woman who is researcher with AISEC in Bengaluru claimed that the police assaulted her at Koyembedu Bus Station with a baton because she chose to rest because she was suffering from migrane.

“There is no safety, even in a public bus terminus for a woman. There is no freedom to spend little time to rest, if sick. Four police personnel, including two women, tortured me at Koyambedu bus stand,” she screamed, even as the embarrassed minister tried to pacify her.

The minister assured her that action would be taken, but she would not relent. “I have filed a complaint. In the name of safety, people are tortured by the police. The policemen to be dismissed,” she said in anguish.

However, police refuted the charges. A police officer said the constables were on routine duty to move squatters from the bus station and no individual was targeted.

The Commissioner has ordered an inquiry, and pending that report, the two police persons who were reportedly involved in the ‘harassment case’ were shifted out of their posts without any further posting.
