Jallikattu: Shops, schools closed today; autos, cabs not to ply

A near-bandh like situation is expected in Tamil Nadu today, as various organisations have announced protest in support of Jallikattu, the banned bull taming sport.

While shops and schools will be closed, autos and cabs will not play. Opposition trade unions in the transport department, advocates and others too have announced strike today.

Businesses, cinemas and schools will be closed on Friday and buses, autorickshaws and taxis will be off the roads.

The protesters, who include young students and professionals, say their fight is for their culture and Tamil pride and reject the allegation that Jallikattu is cruel to the bulls.

Top lawyers associations have declared a one-day token boycott as an expression of solidarity with the protesting youth.

G Mohanakrishnan, the president of Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) which is arguably the biggest lawyers forum in the country, set the ball rolling when he announced that lawyers would stay off courts on Friday. A decision to this effect was taken at an executive committee meeting headed by Mohanakrishnan.
