Jallikattu protests intensfiy, CM holds crucial meeting, HC declines to interfere

As pro-Jallikattu protests across Tamil Nadu continued to gain steam, chief minister O Panneerselvam today chaired a high level meeting to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court today said it will not "interfere" on the issue of protests in the city against the ban on Jallikattu, holding that the Supreme Court was seized of the matter.

The court made this observation when a mention was made by an advocate K Balu in the open court about the protests that have been going in favour of the bull taming sport.

Thousands of youths, including college students, continued to assemble on the Marina beach front for the second day and staged a protest demonstration demanding holding of the bull taming sport of Jallikattu, which was banned by the Supreme Court.

The agitation, which began at Jallikattu holding venues of Avuniapuram, Palamedu and Alanganallur in Madurai during Pongal, spread to various parts of Tamil Nadu with, people cutting across barriers, hitting the streets in large numbers to express their solidarity with the supporters of the sport.

Earlier today, ministers held talks with agitators at Marina and assured the state government's commitment to hold the bull taming sport in the state.
