All eyes on AIADMK GC, who will be party's next GS?

Barely a day before the ruling AIADMK’s general council meeting, some persons were injured in a clash among two groups at party headquarters in Chennai on Wednesday.

AIADMK cadres on Wednesday attacked and injured the husband of expelled MP Sasikala Pushpa, who was accused of trying to create a law-and-order problem ahead of Thursday's general council meeting to elect a new general secretary. Pushpa has filed a complaint with the Chennai in this matter.

Meanwhile, electing the new general secretary appears to be the sole agenda of today’s AIADMK general council meeting, which late leader J Jayalalithaa’s aide and potential successor V K Sasikala is unlikely to attend.

On Wednesday evening, with only hours left for the crucial meeting, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam along with a couple of his cabinet colleagues visited the marriage hall at Vanagaram to inspect the arrangements.

Meanwhile, amidst demands for appointing Sasikala as the AIADMK general secretary ahead of crucial General Council meet, a senior party leader said there are no indications of any contest to the top post.

Asked if any candidate has filed nomination for the coveted post held by Jayalalithaa, AIADMK spokesperson C Ponnaiyan told reporters that “so far there is no indication of a contest”.

The General Council is “empowered” to take any decision on the matter relating to the election of the General Secretary, the only agenda of Thursday’s meeting, he added.
