Karunanidhi undergoes tracheostomy, 'condition stable'

DMK supremo and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi, who was admitted to a hospital in Chennai last night, underwent tracheostomy today.

"DMK President and former Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Dr Kalaignar M.Karunanidhi, readmitted at Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, Chennai on 15th December 2016 with breathing difficulty due to throat and lung infection, has undergone Tracheostomy to optimise breathing." said the hospital's executive director Dr S Aravindan in a statement.

He added in the statement which was released this afternoon: "He is stable, on antibiotics and is being treated by a team of doctors."

It is to be noted that this is the second time the former chief minister has been hospitalised this month.

A medical bulletin issued by the hospital last night said the 92-year-old leader was suffering from a throat and lung infection. The hospital said his condition is stable and the treatment has begun.

The 92-year-old was rushed to the facility from his Gopalapuram residence at around 11:10 pm, about a week after being discharged from the same hospital.

"Treatment has been initiated to clear his infection. He is stable and is being treated by a team of doctors", said Dr S Aravindan said.
