DMK general council tomorrow, Stalin elevation expected

The General Council of the Opposition DMK, the highest policy level decision making body of the party, would be held here tomorrow in which DMK treasurer M K Stalin is expected to be elevated as working president of the party.

An announcement by the general secretary K Anbazhagan last week stated that the general council would meet at 9 am on January 4 to discuss activities of strengthening the party and the audit report.

The meeting, earlier slated for December 20, had to be postponed as DMK president M Karunanidhi was hospitalised due to breathing difficulties following throat and lung infection and had to under tracheostomy.

Political situation in the state, especially after J. Jayalalithaa’s demise and her staunch loyalist O. Panneerselvam taking over as the new chief minister, will be looked into.

The party will also take stock of the political situation in the State after its defeat in the May 2016 Assembly polls and ahead of the civic bodies polls.

Stalin, also leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, was expected to be appointed working president of the party in the General Council, the powerful decision-making body of DMK.
