Country's first defence corridor to come up in TN: Nirmala Sitharaman

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said the government's announcement of creating defence manufacturing corridors will give a big boost to defence production and has paved the way for setting up the first Defence Production Corridor in Tamil Nadu.

Hours after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced the Union Budget on Thursday, Nirmala Sitharaman informed that the first ever defence corridor will be built in Tamil Nadu, which will link Chennai and Bengaluru.

"Now that the (budget) announcement has been made for defence corridor, the first one will be built starting at Tamil Nadu, linking Chennai and Bengaluru. Announcement for the second corridor will soon be made," she said.

"These are the first ever Defence Production Corridors being formed in the country. These Defence Industry Corridors will give a big boost to defence production in the country," she said.

The Minister said that the Department of Defence Production had recently conducted a major Defence Industries Development Meet in Chennai in January 2018 with huge participation from defence industries, including MSMEs from Chennai, Mysore, Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruchirappalli and from other places as well.

She on Wednesday visited naval units, INS Parundu and INS Kattabomman in south Tamil Nadu, where she interacted with officers and sailors. She visited INS Parundu Naval Air Station at Uchipuli in Ramanathapuram District.

Later, accompanied by Vice Admiral Karambir Singh, she visited INS Kattabomman in Tirunelveli district. She was briefed on the unit's activities by Captain Vishal Gupta, the Commanding Officer, a Defence release said.

CM welcomes, oppn slam Union budget

The union budget tabled by finance minister Arun Jaitley in Parliament on Thursday evoked mixed reactions in Tamil Nadu political arena.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswamiwelcomed the Union budget describing it as 'fairly balanced' and 'growth-oriented'.

"I commend the Union Finance Minister for presenting the Budget which is fairly balanced, growth-oriented, that focuses on development of agriculture, rural development and health sector," he said about the first post-GST regime budget by Arun Jaitley.

Palaniswami said, “We welcome the decision to give a big push to agricultural and allied sector. Enhancement of the minimum support price for all crops to cover at least 1.5 times that of the production cost will benefit the farmers in a big way.”

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president S Thirunavukkarasar said, "the budget has been prepared by having the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in mind. Various crucial issues have not been addressed."

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko said, "Jaitley has said the income of farmers would double. Was he meaning the Adani group? I think Jaitely should be in a different world to claim that the earnings of farmers would double by 2022."

Sanusha alleges sexual harassment on train

Actress Sanusha was allegedly harassed on a moving train from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday night.

She has stated that none of her co-passengers save for two men, reacted to the incident or supported her.

“I was sleeping. Suddenly I felt something touch my lip. When I woke up I saw this guy lying on the upper berth opposite me trying to feel my lips. I immediately twisted his hand and switched on the light,” she said.

"I tried reaching out to a person in the berth below me for help but he didn't bother. I was shouting but no one cared to respond. This happened around 1.10 am. Just two people, scriptwriter Unni and another passenger, Renjith, came forward to help," she said.

There were many people, including women in the compartment, but no one came forward to help. I was screaming…It's sad how the others behaved, said Sanusha.

The Thrissur railway police have arrested accused Anto Bose under section 354 IPC for outraging the modesty of a woman.

"I want to reveal myself and speak up because I want this to be an encouragement to other women to act when they are in such situations," she added.

“The topic is Tamil Nadu. I chose to speak on it out of sheer necessity. Our state has sunk to the lowest depth. It affecting my dignity as a man, even more as a Tamilian," he said.

“I yearn to see my state rise to the height it deserves. The rise of my state will translate into the rise of my nation. Harvard is a seat of learning like our Nalanda University," he said.

"If only we had continued that tradition without any break, we would have been holding such seminars at least 200 years back."

He added: "These platforms are important and can’t be neglected. This is going to be an engagement with more fortunate minds who availed an opportunity to seek knowledge."

A place that dispenses knowledge for money or free, is still a seat of wisdom. Having their ears, even though only momentarily, is a great opportunity, he said further.
