Nirmala Sitharaman's car attacked by DMK workers

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's car on Wednesday came under attack from a group of DMK workers, who pelted it with stones, threw slippers and showed black flags, condemning the centre for not forming the Cauvery Management Board.

The DMK volunteers were standing about 200 metres away from the Parthibanur junction in Ramanathapuram to show black flags to the Minister to protest against the Centre’s refusal to form the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) when the incident happened.

Police prevented them from surging forward by holding them back with ropes. Police said the stones hit the rear end of the vehicle, which did not suffer any damage and the minister continued with her journey.

All the DMK workers were removed and arrested, they said. BJP workers following the minister’s convoy in a vehicle shouted slogans against DMK,to which the latter too responded.

DMK’s district secretary Suba. Tha. Diwakaran, who led the protest said they assembled to register their protest in peaceful manner but were provoked by the BJP volunteers.

Nirmala was on a day’s visit to the district to review the implementation of ‘Gram Swaraj Abhiyan’, the Centre’s village self governance scheme.
