Thousands of JACTTO-GEO members arrested across TN

Thousands of members of the Joint Action Committee of Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Organisations-Government Employees’ Organisations (JACTTO-GEO), including  scores of women, were arrested in Chennai city when then attempted to take out a march towards the State Secretariat to press their charter of demands.

Despite the appeal from the government and precautionary arrests, members of Joint Action Committee of Tamilnadu Teachers’ Organisations – Government Employees Organisations went ahead with their protests this morning in Chennai.

Their demands include reverting back to the old pension scheme, and correcting the anomalies in the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations.

Senior Minister D Jayakumar had advised the teachers not to go on protest explaining that the government was not in a position to fulfil their monetary demands.

More than 6,000 police personnel were deployed on security duty on the roads leading

to the Secretariat, as the agitators, tried to breach barricades, jostled with police,

staged road roko agitations, before they were arrested.

JACTTO organised several small protests in various districts across the State including in Madurai, Nagercoil and Vellore on Monday and several members of the group were arrested.

The police have also been making preventive arrests and have asked bus and van drivers to not transport teachers to the protests, alleged A Mayavan from JACTTO. The total number of protesters gathering in Chennai may dip if they are detained in their hometowns.
