The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected jailed AIADMK leader V K Sasikala's review petition seeking re-examination of its verdict holding her guilty in a 19-year-old disproportionate assets case.
The judges declined the AIADMK chief's request to be set free, ruling that the top court did not find any reason to change its verdict convicting Sasikala, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's foster son, and Elavarasi, widow of Sasikala's elder brother.
"We do not find any error in the common judgment impugned, much less an apparent error on the face of the record, so as to call for its review. The review petitions are, accordingly, dismissed," a bench of Justices S A Bobde and Amitava Roy.
Meanwhile, AIADMK (Amma) leader TTV Dhinakaran on Wednesday removed several district functionaries and minister R B Udayakumar from their party posts and appointed his supporters.
Udayakumar was heading the party's Puratchi Thalaivi Amma Peravai. Madurai Urban district secretary and Madurai North MLA V V Rajan Chellappa has been removed and replaced by former Usilampatti MLA E Mahendran. On Tuesday, he removed Vaithilingam, it may be recalled.
Just when it looked like that political crisis in Tamil Nadu might finally be over after the merger of the two warring factions of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), a new problem arose when 19 legislators, owing allegiance to Dhinakaran, met Governor Vidyasagar Rao and withdrew support to the Chief Minister.
