The 19 AIADMK legislators belonging to the faction led by jailed party general secretary V.K. Sasikala's nephew T.T.V. Dinakaran were on Tuesday ferried to a resort in Puducherry to safeguard them from switching their loyalty, after they withdrew support to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.
In the meantime, DMK working president and leader of opposition M K Stalin wrote to governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, urging him to order for floor test.
He said: "Consequent upon the identical letters given by 22 Members of the Legislative Assembly today to Hon'ble Governor expressing lack of confidence on the Chief Minister Thiru Edappadi K Palanisamy, an unprecedented constitutional crisis eruped in which the present government headed by Thiru Edappadi K Palanisamy has lost the majority."
Stalin added: "In similar occasion, on the same day the then governor of Karnataka directed the then chief minister of Karnataka, B S Yeddyurappa, to prove his majority in the House."
He said, "Any inordinate delay in asking the chief minister to prove his majority in the instant case will pave the way for continuance of an unconstitutional government and it will destablize the democratic norms".
Earlier in their identical letters to governor, the MLAs said, "I hereby express my lack of confidence on Edappadi K Palaniswami and withdraw my earlier support given to him vide this communication. I hereby submit that I have not given up my membership of the AIADMK and I am only doing my duty as a conscious citizen to express the abuse and misuse of the Constitution provision".
Meanwhile, Dinakaran sacked Rajya Sabha member Vaithialingam from the party for his announcement that a general council meeting would remove Sasikala as general secretary of the party during the time of merger between the two factions.
However, Vaithilingam said that Dinakaran does not have the power to remove him from the party as he has already been expelled.
